NIHO TANIWHA
// PATIKI

Te Pōroa and Te Aoroa are inspired by the Patiki traditional raranga pattern. The patiki pattern is based on the diamond shape of the flounder fish, it is a metaphor for the work of women providing whanau and iwi.

The video for this pou whenua is taken during the night of the red moon and filmed from the hills of Turanga-rere (Brooklyn) looking down over the city. This work is one of two filmed from the maunga surrounding the city acknowledging the tupuna maunga and the tupuna awa is incredibly important as the soil and the water hold memory and the patterns of life.

\\\ MARAMATAKA | KOREKORE TE WHĪWHĪA

The red moon was filmed as a time lapse which wasn't very successful. Interestingly the red moon occurred during a maramataka cycle historically known to be an unproductive night on the shore with winds sweeping the sea.
